From Infantry to CTO: The Power of Adaptability in Tech

 - a Podcast with Lloyd Sanders, CTO Offset Strategic Services

Feb 24, 2025

This engaging conversation between Thomas Richard and Lloyd Sanders dives into the deep end of cybersecurity, covering the techniques and training required to deliver quality security, and the need to grow gills. As Lloyd puts it, ever-evolving AI, cyber threats, and deepfakes demand constant learning, so don’t just learn to swim, ‘Grow Gills’ and learn to swim underwater!  Stay adaptable, embrace change, and stay ahead!

Transitioning from the military to tech leadership wasn’t just a career shift for Lloyd; it was an identity shift. Lloyd said, “I wanted to understand technology and how to solve problems with it." He leveraged his experience in the Army and as a customer in the defense sector to today, driving innovation at OSS as the CTO. As a former infantryman, with a unique ability to build gaming computers, Lloyd was able to quickly adapt his security-focused mindset and problem-solving skills into cybersecurity capabilities. This (mostly) seamless transition involved quickly  learning corporate security regulations and best practices, and being willing to take initiative. But as employee number two at the then fledgling company, OSS, he wore multiple hats, handling HR, IT, and security before stepping into the critical leadership role of Chief technology Officer. His story underscores the importance of continuous learning in an industry shaped by evolving threats like AI-powered deepfakes and social engineering attacks.

“I’ve had the privilege of knowing and working with Lloyd for ten years, including seven years shoulder-to-shoulder through OSS' beginning. His expertise, leadership, mentorship, and passion for chasing greatness are truly inspiring.” – TJ Wright President & Founder OSS.

Now a CTO and an industry award-winning cybersecurity leader, Lloyd emphasizes that security extends beyond technology—it’s embedded in every part of an organization. He believes that effective leadership requires understanding, learning, and framing information in a way that resonates with stakeholders. He also highlights the need for organizations to invest not just in technology, but in education. His journey exemplifies how military experience can translate into successful civilian careers, proving that adaptability is key in an ever-changing tech landscape. Lloyd shares that organizations must not only invest in technology but also education, because as we say, "Hackers don’t break firewalls, they break people."
